SEC Nigeria register and public notices

A plain guide to checking a platform before you pay.

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Nigeria publishes a register of operators it has approved and public notices about operators it says are not registered. This site shows both, as the Commission published them, and explains what each one means for a crypto or forex platform.

The register tells you who the Commission has approved. The notices tell you who it has warned about. Neither is a verdict on a platform you are considering; they are records of what the regulator has published.

What this guide covers

The pages in this guide

The register is not a list of platforms the SEC has vetted against fraud

The SEC register is a record of entities that have submitted the required documents and paid the required fees to operate as capital market operators. The Commission checks the paperwork, not the character of the people behind the platform. An entry on the register means the operator has a licence to carry on a specified activity under the Investment and Securities Act, nothing more.

A platform may be fully licensed and still treat customers badly. The Commission's own investor alerts have warned about registered operators that later ran into trouble. The register does not track complaints, disciplinary proceedings, or court cases. Those records live elsewhere, if they are public at all.

When a reader asks whether a platform is safe, the register answers only one part of that question: is the entity authorised? Safety is a different question, and it requires looking at the platform's conduct, its history, and the terms it offers. The Commission does not guarantee that a registered operator will honour withdrawals or avoid losses.

A platform with a Nigerian bank account is not necessarily registered with the SEC

Many unregistered platforms collect naira through local banks, and that fact alone confuses readers. The Central Bank of Nigeria licenses banks, not the SEC, and a bank account is not proof of any securities or investment licence. An unregistered platform can open a corporate account with a Nigerian bank as long as the bank's own rules are met.

The SEC's public notices have repeatedly warned that some entities soliciting funds from Nigerians are not registered, even when they use Nigerian phone numbers, local addresses, and local bank accounts. These details create an impression of legitimacy, but they do not replace a search of the Commission's register.

The correct order is to search the SEC register first, then compare the name on the register with the name on the bank account. If the names differ, or if the platform is not on the register at all, the bank account does not cure the absence of a licence.

The SEC register covers only entities that fall under the Investment and Securities Act

The Commission registers capital market operators, a term defined by the Act and by the rules made under it. That category includes stockbrokers, issuing houses, fund managers, and similar intermediaries. A forex platform that trades currencies on its own account, without offering investment contracts, may fall outside the Commission's remit entirely.

Crypto platforms are treated differently because the Commission's guidance says digital assets that behave like securities fall under its authority. But a platform that only swaps one crypto for another, without offering an investment product, may not need SEC registration. The distinction turns on what the platform actually offers, not on the word 'crypto' in its name.

Readers should not assume that every trading platform must appear on the SEC register. The register is for a specific class of operators, and a platform that is not on it may be outside the Commission's jurisdiction rather than in breach of the law.

The public notices are not a complete list of unregistered platforms

The SEC publishes notices about entities it has identified as operating without registration, but the absence of a notice does not mean a platform is registered. The Commission can only warn about entities it has investigated or received complaints about. Many unregistered platforms never appear in any notice because the SEC has not turned its attention to them.

A reader who searches the register and finds no result, then searches the notices and finds no mention, still knows nothing about the platform's legal status. The correct next step is to contact the Commission directly and ask whether the entity is known to it. The Commission's contact details are on its own website.

The notices serve as a record of the SEC's actions, not as a directory of every unregistered operator. They are useful when they name a specific platform, but their silence about others should not be read as approval.

Registration and authorisation are not the same thing for a platform that only displays prices

Some platforms only show exchange rates or crypto prices and direct users to trade elsewhere. These platforms are not executing trades, holding client funds, or offering investment advice, so they may not need to be registered with the SEC. The Commission's register is for operators that perform a capital market function, not for information services.

A platform that takes a commission for referring users to a broker is in a different position. If the referral fee depends on the user's trading activity, the platform may be acting as an intermediary and may fall under the Commission's rules. The line between an information service and a brokerage is not always obvious.

When a reader asks whether a price-display platform is registered, the answer depends on what the platform does with the user's order. If the platform never touches the user's money and never executes a trade, the SEC register may be irrelevant.

A foreign regulator's register does not appear in the SEC Nigeria database

The SEC Nigeria register contains only entities that the Commission itself has approved. A platform may be licensed in another country, for example by a European or American regulator, and that licence will not show up in the Nigerian register. The Nigerian register is not a global directory.

Some platforms display foreign licences on their websites and invite Nigerian users to treat them as equivalent. The SEC has not adopted any foreign licence as a substitute for its own registration, except in limited cross-border arrangements that are published separately. A foreign licence does not make a platform registered in Nigeria.

If a platform claims to be regulated but does not appear on the SEC Nigeria register, the reader should ask which regulator has issued the licence and then check that regulator's own register. The Nigerian SEC register answers only one question: is the entity registered with the Commission in Nigeria?

The SEC register can show a platform as registered while the Central Bank still blocks bank transfers for it

A name on the SEC register records a capital market authorisation. It does not instruct banks to process payments. The Central Bank of Nigeria has issued separate restrictions on banks dealing in cryptocurrency and virtual currency transactions. A platform may hold SEC registration and still be denied access to the banking system. Readers who see a name on the register should not assume they can fund an account through a Nigerian bank with no friction.

The reverse is also true. A platform may be absent from the SEC register but able to receive transfers through payment channels that do not rely on a Nigerian bank. This creates a situation where the register answers one question—is the platform registered as a capital market operator?—but leaves the banking question unanswered. The two regulators act under different laws and publish different lists. Checking one does not check the other.

Before sending money, confirm the payment method with the platform and with the receiving bank. Ask the bank whether it processes transfers for the platform's category. If the bank declines, that is a banking decision, not an SEC finding. The SEC register does not override the Central Bank's directives, and a platform's marketing may not mention that.
